Torpedo Bat - MLB Rules

MLB Bat Rules

Why it Matters:

The 2025 MLB season began this week and the New York Yankees surprised fans and competition alike with a new bat they call the Torpedo Bat. In just 3 games they launched 15 home runs, leaving everyone wondering are these new bats legal? Based on the rules below, it appears they are, unless MLB changes the rules.

Key Provisions:

  • Bat Size and Material (Section 3.02(a)):
Bats must be smooth, round, and made of a single piece of solid wood.
    • They cannot be more than 2.61 inches in diameter at the thickest part or longer than 42 inches.
    • Laminated or experimental bats require prior approval from Major League Baseball before use in games, including exhibitions.
  • Cupped Bats (Section 3.02(b)):
    • Bats may have an indentation (a cupped end) up to 1¼ inches deep, with a diameter between one and two inches. The indentation must be curved and free of any foreign material.
  • Grip Treatment (Section 3.02(c)):
    • The bat handle may be covered or treated with a material to improve grip, but only up to 18 inches from the end of the handle. Any substance extending beyond this point results in the bat being removed from the game.
  • Bat Color (Section 3.02(d)):
Colored bats are not permitted unless officially approved by Major League Baseball.
